Since 2017, Professor Philip Poortmans is head of the Department of radiation therapy at the Curie Institute, Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay. After completing his medical studies at the University of Antwerp in 1986, Philip Poortmans was trained as an oncologist-radiotherapist in the hospitals of Middelheim and Vincentius in Antwerp. He wrote his PhD thesis on quality assurance in clinical trials on breast cancer in 2005 at the University of Maastricht. Over the past 25 years, much of his work has been devoted to all aspects of clinical trials, including quality assurance, in particular the optimization of breast cancer management, malignant lymphoma, urology and rare tumors.

He is focused on the training and development of ‘ guidelines ‘, in particular on the determination of the tumor target volume, promoted by his speaker skills and his ability to communicate in 4 languages (Dutch, French, English and Spanish).

In 2016 and 2017, Prof Poortmans served as Chair of the ECCO Oncopolicy Committee.

After the elections of the ECCO President 2018-2019, Poortmans took up the role of ECCO President-Elect and, from 2018, as President of the European Cancer Organization.
